The ancient city of Xaman-Ha, known as Playa del Carmen, was the port of embarkation going toward the sacred island of Cozumel, which was the site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, goddess of fertility. Women from all over the Yucatan would come to Xamana-Ha to make the trip to Cozumel in canoes. Some of the Mayan structures have been preserved in Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen was the most accessible temple in its time.
